UCC to Address Cyberbullying and Online Safety at Kololo Secondary School
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is set to engage students, parents, teachers and guardians on cyberbullying, online safety and responsible digital citizenship at Kololo Secondary School in Kampala on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
The engagement is part of UCC's child online protection efforts, which aim to help young people use digital platforms more safely and responsibly.
According to an announcement by UCC Consumer Affairs, the session will bring attention to some of the challenges children face online, including cyberbullying and other online safety concerns.
Why online safety matters
Children are spending more time online for education, communication, entertainment and social interaction. While digital technology provides important opportunities for learning, it can also expose young people to risks when they are not properly guided.
UCC has previously highlighted the importance of digital skills and online safety education for children, while its ICT-in-Education programme promotes digital skills and responsible use of technology in schools.
Cyberbullying can take different forms, including hurtful messages, spreading embarrassing information or images, online harassment and deliberately excluding someone from digital groups.
What parents and teachers can do
Parents and teachers have an important role in helping children develop safe digital habits.
They can encourage children to:
- Think carefully before posting or sharing content.
- Keep passwords and personal information private.
- Avoid communicating with unknown people online.
- Report bullying, threats or inappropriate content.
- Tell a trusted adult when something online makes them uncomfortable.
- Treat other people respectfully on social media and messaging platforms.
- Check privacy and security settings on their accounts.
UCC also encourages responsible use of communication services and advises users to report security concerns and harmful online activities through the appropriate channels.
Building safer digital citizens
The Kololo engagement comes as Uganda continues to expand initiatives focused on safer digital spaces for children and young people. UCC and its partners launched the Be a Cyber Hero campaign in August 2026, a three-year initiative promoting safer and more responsible use of digital platforms, particularly among children and young people.
For schools, digital safety is increasingly becoming an important part of creating a safe learning environment.
SchoolNest will continue to share information that helps parents, schools and students navigate education and technology safely.
